Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand how persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus who reside in a community in the State of Mexico view their illness. Study Materials and Methods: An ethnographic approach was used to support the data analysis. The study was conducted at a primary health care center. It involved eight people who came to the clinic for nursing consultation during the period between December 2009 and July 2010. The ethical aspects particular to the research were respected. Results: Listening to patients who live with diabetes enabled the authors to enter the world of this disease through their stories. Conclusions: An ethnographic approach made it possible to understand the meaning patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus give to their illness, from the standpoint of beliefs and habits. As they described it, their experience enables them to resist the persistence of the disease.
