SAAVEDRA GARCIA, María Luisa; AGUILAR ANAYA, María de los Ángeles e TAPIA SANCHEZ, Blanca. Financing in Women-Led Companies in Mexico City. Pensam. gest. [online]. 2020, n.49, pp.45-73. Epub 30-Out-2021. ISSN 1657-6276.
The objective of this research was to make a diagnosis aiming to know how women-led companies are being financed, and what are the main obstacles to accessing funding sources. Data was collected by applying a questionnaire to a sample of 272 volunteer entrepreneurs from Mexico City. The main findings show that micro sized enterprises predominate in services and commerce sectors, and that they do not have legal personhood. Businesswomen do not access government and private aid, as a consequence of the lack of participation in business networks, preferring to finance themselves with their own resources, and with family and friends. For this reason, only a third have accessed external financing sources, and the main obstacle to obtaining those is excess requirements, which include owning real estate and other loan guarantees. These findings highlight the lack of support for women entrepreneurs, who require both training and financing to make their companies competitive.
