Abstract

FRESNEDA BAUTISTA, Óscar. Evolution of the structure of social classes in Colombia, 1938-2010. Have the middle classes grown?. Soc. Econ. [online]. 2017, n.33, pp.205-236. ISSN 1657-6357.  https://doi.org/10.25100/sye.v0i33.5630.

The article describes how the structure of social classes of workers in Colombia between 1938 and 2010 has evolved, and points out the correspondence between this process and the regimes of accumulation that the country has had in this time-frame. For this, it uses a classification of social classes that is applied to different statistical sources that cover this period. It is concluded that, in a long-term perspective, after a significant increase in the middle classes during the import substitution regime, there has not been a continuous increase in these classes since the 1990s.

Keywords : social class; middle class; economic and social inequality; model of development; economic and social development.
