Abstract

VIAFARA LOPEZ, Carlos Augusto. Intergenerational social mobility according to skin color in Colombia. Soc. Econ. [online]. 2017, n.33, pp.263-287. ISSN 1657-6357.  https://doi.org/10.25100/sye.v0i33.5632.

In this article, intergenerational occupational mobility according to skin color in Colombia is studied. Data from the PERLA survey carried out in 2010 and with representativeness at the national level are used. The method of mobility tables and the estimation of log-linear models were applied. The results show that opportunities for upward social mobility are restricted by the social class of origin and at the same time are less for people with darker skin colors. This situation increases the inequality in occupational opportunities according to skin color and shapes a pigmentocratic social pyramid in Colombia.

Keywords : social mobility; activities; ethnic groups; racial groups.
