In Colombia, the struggle for historical memory has focused on the opposition between victims and victimizers. Here I will introduce a third figure, that of the "righteous in the Colombian armed conflict", thus rescuing the category of "righteous among the nations", which up to now has been used exclusively with reference to the Jewish holocaust. Taking this step allows us, first, to introduce a novel instrument to cauterize the lacerated civil fabric of societies such as Colombia, which come out of long-term conflicts, and must reactivate the formation of bonds of solidarity between citizens belonging to different social and political groups; second, to provide a useful narrative tool to counteract the negative effects of extreme polarization on the sustainability of a civil discourse in the Colombian public sphere; and finally, reflect on the challenges inherent in certain symbolic exchanges between Europe and Latin America.
