Abstract

GALLEGO ORTIZ, Stefany; MUNOZ GONZALEZ, Edgar Julián  and  GARCIA, Gustavo A. Spatial analysis of intra-urban labor informality in Medellín. Soc. Econ. [online]. 2018, n.35, pp.9-31. ISSN 1657-6357.  https://doi.org/10.25100/sye.v0i35.5647.

In this paper we study the spatial dimension of intra-urban labor informality, taking the city of Medellin, Colombia, as a case study. Based on regression models with spatial dependence, the main factors that determine this phenomenon are studied. The results show that there are evident spatial patterns of intra-urban labor informality in Medellín, whose social segmentation regarding quality of employment, education, employment opportunities and housing conditions is evident between the north and south of the city. It was also found that a higher percentage of both women and precarious housing increases the levels of labor informality. On the contrary, the variables associated with education and modern employment have a negative effect on this phenomenon.

Keywords : labor informality; spatial analysis; spatial econometrics; Colombia.
