This article proposes the incorporation of peacebuilding as a fourth (new) substantive function in Colombian universities. In the context of Colom bia’s prolonged armed conflict, it is argued that higher education institu tions are capable of assuming a more active role in peace building. The proposal implies transformations in the traditional substantive functions in curricula (teaching), lines of research and programs of linkage with so ciety (extension), by analyzing the implications, challenges, and possible criticisms of this initiative. The study concludes that, despite challenges, this new substantive function could significantly transform the role of universities in the consolidation of lasting peace in Colombia.
