SIERRA-FITZGERALD, OSCAR. Memory and Metamemory: Functional Relationships and their Stability. Univ. Psychol. [online]. 2010, vol.9, n.1, pp.213-227. ISSN 1657-9267.
The general ability to reflect upon oneself's cognitive processes is called metacognition and upon oneself's memory abilities in particular, metamemory. Employing the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test standarized in Colombia (PAAVR; Sierra, 2001), predictive metamemory and its stability was explored. Before each learning trial of the PAAVR, 428 healthy subjects estimated how many words they thought they could remember. Correlations between the learning scores and the corresponding estimations were high (0.35-0.73). The correlation between total learning and its total estimation -derived from adding the individual estimations- was 0.77- The stability of the subjects' estimations one year later was significant. Interference and forgetfulness, normaly observed in the processes of codification and memory recovery, occurred in a strict parallel manner in metamemory.
