Resumen
CORREA RESTREPO, Francisco. CRECIMIENTO ECONÓMICO, DESIGUALDAD SOCIAL Y MEDIO AMBIENTE: EVIDENCIA EMPÍRICA PARA AMÉRICA LATINA. Rev. ing. univ. Medellin [online]. 2007, vol.6, n.10, pp.12-30. ISSN 1692-3324.
This article aims at carrying out an economic analysis over the validity of the hypothesis of Kuznets' Environmental Curve for Latin America. Furthermore, it aims at empirically verifying the hypothesis that social and economical inequalities are determining factors in the explanation of the environmental quality. The outcome of the research allows us to conclude that it is necessary to re-evaluate the hypothesis of Kuznets' Environmental Curve not only based upon the methodological problems, but also in regards to the conceptualization of the Environment. Also, recognizing that Kuznets' Environmental Curve is only restricted to the relation between pollution and economical growth, this work concludes that the countries of the region must make an effort to implement public policies that would save time to reach the necessary threshold point.
