ECHEVERRI LONDONO, Carlos Alberto  e  MAYA VASCO, Gabriel Jaime. Relation between fine particles (PM 2.5) and breathable particles (PM 10) in Medellin city. Rev. ing. univ. Medellin [online]. 2008, vol.7, n.12, pp.23-42. ISSN 1692-3324.

This article shows part of the results from the project called: 'Respiratory pathologies in pre-school children and their relation to atmospheric contamination in Medellin,' carried out by Universidad de Medellin and Universidad CES for Medellin Health Secretariat according to contract No. 4700026668, year 2006. Simultaneous measurements of fine particles (PM2.5) and breathable particles (PM10) were made from February to October, 2007 in several sites of Medellin, the capital city of Antioquia State, where about 2,250,000 inhabitants live. In almost all cases, analysis results show a positive and linear correlation between both parameters. Average ratio (PM2.5/PM10) for sites and zones tested in this study was 0.67 approximately, which is a very meaningful value, what makes us think that annual norm for PM10 can probably be accomplished, but not the one for PM2.5. Results obtained identify fine particles as one of the main contamination problems in Medellin city.

Palavras-chave : air pollution; fine particles (PM2.5); breathable particles (PM10); ratio (PM2.5/PM10).
