Abstract

MALDONADO RONDON, Esperanza; GOMEZ ARAUJO, Iván Darío  and  CHIO CHO, Gustavo. Ass esment seismic da mag e of masonry buildings based on simulat e vulnera bility functions. Rev. ing. univ. Medellin [online]. 2008, vol.7, n.13, pp.39-56. ISSN 1692-3324.

The aim of this paper is to describe the application of an assessment model damage that masonry building within a city might suffer when a certain seismic event occurs. This model was generated to meet the specific conditions of our country. The model is based on the application of seismic vulnerability functions or seismic damage probability matrices elaborated by means of simulation techniques. These functions and matrices are proposed for maximum acceleration values ranging between 0.02g to 0.25g and they are recommended for large scale use. The model was applied in a big town located on northwest Colombian, near Bucaramanga. For its application it was necessary to collect basic data of the target buildings. This model was proposed based on a previous seismic hazard study. With the collected information the model was applied using computer tools and damage maps for different seismic events were constructed. The results showed the easy applicability of the model, so that the experience gained proves that can it be applied in Colombian cities.

Keywords : Seismic vulnerability function; damage probability matrix; masonry; seismic damage.
