ARJONA-RODRIGUEZ, Sindy et al. EFFECT OF THE PRECHLORINATION POINT ON THE TRIHALOMETHANES FORMATION IN CONVENTIONAL WATER TREATMENT PROCESS. Rev. ing. univ. Medellín [online]. 2012, vol.11, n.20, pp.57-66. ISSN 1692-3324.

On the drinking water treatment plants is normal the use of chlorine as disinfectant to control the microbiological risk that the superficial waters present; however, this product can be reacts with the organic natural matter (MON) favoring the formation of undesirable organics by-products. In Puerto Mallarino drinking water treatment plant based in Cali (Colombia), the effect of prechlorination point over the generation of trihalomethanes (THM) was evaluated at full scale. Two treatment sequences were considered: 1. Prechlorination-Coagulation-Clarification and 2. Coagulation-Clarification-Prechlorination. In average, results show a lower THM formation in the sequence 2 (0,71 µg/L) if compared with the sequence 1 (12,88 µg/L), which represents a 94,5% reduction. In both conditions, chemical risk was reduced without compromising the microbiological quality of clarified water.

Palavras-chave : prechlorination; natural organic matter; trihalomethanes; drinking water treatment; sanitary risk.
