Abstract

MARQUEZ DIAZ, Luis Gabriel  and  AVELLA AREVALO, Howard Waldo. ESTIMATION OF STATISTICAL VALUE OF LIFE ON ROAD SAFETY IN BOGOTÁ. Rev. ing. univ. Medellín [online]. 2012, vol.11, n.21, pp.101-112. ISSN 1692-3324.

Results of a research entitled ''Statistical Assessment of Life for Analyzing Impact of Accident Rates'' are shown in this article; the research is based on an experiment of choice conducted through stated preference surveys with the purpose of estimating the will to pay for having risk of death decreased in a scenario of public transportation in Bogotá. The experiment assessed the choice between conventional transportation service and a new safer system by comparing several characteristics: rate, trip time, and death probability. Data collected are consistent to a Binary Probit model which includes income and educational level of the individuals. It was found that the statistical value of life in this context is 128 million Colombian pesos, which is a significantly lower price when compared to international values. The debate about this topic at a domestic level is then opened.

Keywords : Statistical value of life; discrete choice models; stated preferences.
