Abstract

VERGARA COLLAZOS, DIEGO et al. PREVALENCE OF BRUCELLOSIS IN CATTLE RAW MILK SPREAD IN THE CITY OF POPAYAN CAUCA. SEPTEMBER-DECEMBER 2006. Rev.Bio.Agro [online]. 2008, vol.6, n.2, pp.76-85. ISSN 1692-3561.

The Cattle Brucellosis is a highly contagious zoonosis and it is greatly released in the world according to World Health Organization (WHO). This disease causes important looses in the production, reproduction of dayri cattle. In humans it affects the health, productivity and human quality. This article aims at determining the prevalence of Brucellosis in raw milk that is expended in the city of Popayán and identificate the factors associated with the presence of Brucellosis in the different raw milk provider herds. At descriptive study of cross-cutting was carried out. There were evaluated 247 marketed samples of raw milk in the city of Popayan by 11 routes, originating from the municipalities of Sotará, Puracé and Coconuco, principal providers of raw milk in the city of Popayan. The Ring Test Technique was used for detecting specific antibrucella antibodies and a survey was applied to the owners of herds. The prevalence found in this study was of 15 percent (37/247). The factors associated significantly (p < 0.05) with the presence of Brucellosis in raw milk expended in the city of Popayán were: milk originated from the municipality of Sotará 25%(21/84), marketed milk by the third route with 58.3% (7/11), only fed with grass 40% (4/10), coexistence with minor species 23.2% (13/56), inappropriate vaccinated 27.8% (10/36) and retained placenta 26.1% (6 /23). The prevalence found in the study with the Ring Test Technique (15%) is greater than the reported in previous studies with Indirect Elisa Technique (5%) for Cauca Department. The presence of Brucellosis may be associated with the origin of raw milk, nutrition of the animals, coexistence with minor species, vaccination and retention of the placenta; conditioning and predisposing factors that make part of the production process of milk which can be prevented and controled by the stablishing of relevant sanitary measures
