Abstract

RAMIREZ-CHAVES, HÉCTOR E et al. BIODIVERSITY AT THE UNIVERSIDAD DEL CAUCA CAMPUS, POPAYAN, COLOMBIA. Rev.Bio.Agro [online]. 2010, vol.8, n.2, pp.104-117. ISSN 1692-3561.

The Universidad del Cauca's campus is located in Popayan city, Department of Cauca, Colombia. The city surroundings and the Department are characterized by a high biológical diversity. Therefore these areas have high animal and plant species richness. The growing urbanization of Popayan city involves an expansión of its geographical limits and an accelerated loss of natural areas. For this reason, a study of the biodiversity at this time is necessary. This work aims to contribute useful information to conservation of the natural areas associated with the urban sector. Here, we present the results of the animal and plant species present in 4 natural áreas located at the campus of the Universidad del Cauca. In total, 114 birds species, 3 amphibious, 3 reptiles, 6 mammals (1 marsupial, 4 bats, 1 rodent), and one fish species were found. The plant richness in the four study áreas corresponds to 114 woody plants. Furthermore, we present suggestions about the relevance of the conservation of these natural areas, the importance of the species found, and their ecológical relationships with the urban áreas.
