ALVAREZ, JOHN ALEJANDRO; COTES, JOSÉ MIGUEL e MARIN, MAURICIO. DETECTION OF VIRUSES ASSOCIATED TO PLANTING MATERIAL OF TAMARILLO IN COLOMBIA. Rev.Bio.Agro [online]. 2011, vol.9, n.1, pp.43-50. ISSN 1692-3561.
The Tamarillo virus disease is one of the most limiting problems of this crop in Colombia. In this research we evaluated, as a source of inoculum, seeds from fruits collected in the field, as well as nursery stocks from Antioquia, Cundinamarca, Nariño and Putumayo, and seedlings germinated under greenhouse conditions. These assessments were made by ELISA and complemented by sequencing the capsid gene of the most frequently detected virus. Seeds from fruits show the presence of AMV, CMV, potyvirus, PLRV and ToMV in at least one sample, but not TSWV and ToRSV. PLRV (26%) and potyviruses (16%) were most frequently associated with this material. The identification in nursery seedlings indicated the presence of potyviruses (35%), PLRV (24%), ToRSV (22%) and CMV (0.6%) in the analyzed samples. In the plantlets from the greenhouse trials, PLRV and potyviruses were detected again. These findings raise the possibility to consider seed transmission of virus in this crop and represent the first report of seed transmission of PLRV in the world.
