Abstract

This review shows the nutritional value and the impact to human health of consumption of Banana passion fruit (Passiflora mollissima Bailey), based on the nutrient and antioxidant characteristics. It belongs to the family of passifloraceae, is a native plant from the Andean region of Americas. This plant in Colombia is cultivated mainly in eastern and western mountain ranges. The fruit is a source of vitamins A, C and riboflavin, containing potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, chlorine, iron; provides moderate amounts of carbohydrates and calories. The content of phenols, flavonoids and carotenoids confers the ability to scavenge free radicals that cause oxidative stress which is related to the origin and development of cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer.
