Abstract

ALVIS-GORDO, JOSÉ FRANCO; CABAS-GIRALDO, LAURA DANIELA  and  VALENCIA-RAMOS, DIANA PAOLA. PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF WOOD URACO (Ocotea brevipetiolata van der Werff), MUNICIPALITY OF SIBUNDOY, PUTUMAYO. Rev.Bio.Agro [online]. 2017, vol.15, n.1, pp.66-75. ISSN 1692-3561.  https://doi.org/10.18684/BSAA(15)66-75.

A research on the physical - mechanical wood properties of the Uraco species (Ocotea brevipetiolata) was carried out in the Sibundoy municipality, Putumayo department, whose objective was to determine its importance from its quality and usefulness in the production of different products. Trials on physical properties such as density and shrinking, and mechanical properties such as flexion, shearing, parallel and perpendicular to the fiber compression were performed, taking into account the standards established by Instituto Colombiano de Normas Técnicas; protocols were adjusted according to the trial conditions and methodology included field works, lab assays and information processing. The obtained results show that Ocotea brevipetiolata has a basic density of 0,538 g/cm3, which can be considered as a median to slightly heavy wood, ranking it into the structural group 'C', according to the Junta del Acuerdo de Cartagena; classification; likewise, it is ranked with a very high dimensional stability. According to the American Standards ASTM, mechanical properties show that this wood has medium strength for flexion, shearing and parallel and perpendicular to the fiber compression, indicating that this wood can withstand moderate loads.
