Abstract

DONADO TOLOSA, Antonio. Epistemology for the research of a scholarly text. Encuentros [online]. 2014, vol.12, n.1, pp.11-25. ISSN 1692-5858.

The text book had never been regarded as an object of research in the field of pedagogy, until very recently, when Ossenbach (2000) publishes its inquiries on the significance of the text to improve quality in the teaching and learning processes. This article undertakes the concerns of society, teachers, parents, students and governments under the role of the text book to achieve the new objectives that the development of science and technology pose onto the educational systems. The issue is overloaded with the simplifications and reductionisms conveyed by the positivist research methods, and the prevailing belief that ideology is the most serious concerns. To overcome this bias, the present article applies a hermeneutics method to go to the roots to understand the cognitive processes and the functions of the text book to place them at the maximum of academic excellence. The categories of language, symbol, power, meaning, etc., are examined and built on new unity of brain culture- education as a platform to explore the issue of epistemology in educational research that takes as its object the textbook. A new research paradigm is proposed, the one developed by the epistemologist Miguel Martínez, which is considered very useful to overcome reductionism and contradictions that contaminate the current research work on the textbook.

Keywords : epistemology; text book; ideology; knowledge.
