Abstract

CUESTA M., Oscar Julián  and  LUGO-ORTIZ, Lourdes. News Media Expectations of Journalism Education. A Comparative Analysis between Colombia and Puerto Rico. Encuentros [online]. 2017, vol.15, n.1, pp.15-28. ISSN 1692-5858.  https://doi.org/10.15665/re.v15i1.770.

The article presents the results of an investigation that compared the views of the news media supervisors in Colombia and Puerto Rico on the skills they expect to be developed by journalism programs. Surveys with structured questions were administered, and a descriptive-comparative analysis was conducted. It was determined that supervisors in both countries consider important that the academy form journalists-generalists with digital and multimedia skills, who can produce for multiple platforms and master the skills traditionally associated with the profession. However, while those in Colombia think that the educational focus should be on developing critical thinking; those of Puerto Rico think that it should provide professional training. Both countries conceive that curricula should respond to the demands of the industry.

Keywords : journalism education; journalism skills; news media; Puerto Rico; Colombia.
