Abstract

HENAO SALAZAR, José Ignacio  and  LONDONO-VASQUEZ, David A.. Relation between literacy, socio-cultural context and academic performance:The School of Business Science at University of Envigado´s experience. Encuentros [online]. 2017, vol.15, n.1, pp.29-46. ISSN 1692-5858.  https://doi.org/10.15665/re.v15i1.847.

In this paper, we present some results of the research Relation of the literacy levels with the academic performance at new Management Science School students at University of Envigado (IUE) in 2015-I with students of International Business Administration and Public Accountancy during the research advance until 2016-I. Therefore, we focus on the relation between literacy and academic performance and their overlapping with students´ sociocultural context, with a strong incidence with the meaningful dropping-out given at IUE, mainly, because of the little verbal ability in the students in order to take new knowledge that also requires a new language for representing and expressing. However, the dropping-out is no only produced by linguistics reasons but also aspects such as program election, economic reasons or personal problems and others.

Keywords : literacy; academic performance; sociocultural context; higher education.
