Abstract

The intention of this article is to explore the philosophical and historical underpinnings of the complex meanings and the uses of Critical Thought (CT). Critical Thought is defined as a self-reflective, theory based trans-formative and analytical method of critique of conventional ideologies and actual practices, including those of everyday life, political systems, scientific methods of knowledge creation and of CT itself. Its aim is to re-join moral and scientific values. The article consists of four parts. The first part discusses the multiple and diverse definitions of CT. The second explores is historic origins, its theoretical formulation be the Frankfurt School and the multiple philosophical inputs that shaped and enriched its meaning. The third part clarifies its epistemological, moral and methodological requirements. And the last part presents a few examples of the varied uses of CT.
