Abstract

ROSSELLI, Mónica. Maduración Cerebral y Desarrollo Cognoscitivo. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2003, vol.1, n.1, pp.125-144. ISSN 1692-715X.

Brain maturation correlates with the child's cognitive and behavioral development. This article reviews the association between brain maturation and the development of hand preference, language skills, and executive functions. The most important cortical change associated with the development of complex behaviors is the increase in dendrites. There is an association between right hemisphere maturation and the development of emotional behaviors, and between left hemisphere development and language development. This article gives specific examples of the presence of precursors of motor asymmetry at birth and the later cerebral lateralization of visual, auditory and tactile functions. The participation of both hemispheres during progressive cognitive development is also analyzed. Additional examples are provided about the cognitive sequelae of early brain injuries.

Keywords : Brain maturation; cognitive development; executive functions; verbal language; brain asymmetr.
