Parent education is a very important issue in looking for better environments for child development. It is necessary to understand child's development processes in order to create more productive and satisfactory relations among adults and children. The knowledge about human development is a valuable input for this function. Special emphasis is made on Piaget's and Vygotsky's theories about human development and the educational process that mediates this development. The first three years of life are critical in child developmentthe child's relationship with parents, particularly with the mother is crucial. This relationship is conditioned by the personal history of the mother which involves personal and collective aspects, as well as psychological and cultural factors. Stern's theory about "maternal constellation" and Berger and Luckmann's about "primary socialization" help to understand this interaction. This essay some consequences, of the issues discussed, for health programs dealing with parent education: the need to think of the child as a subject of his own development; the necessity to create programs which take into consideration the cultural, social and economic background; to understand adults as central to the program and not as intermediaries of child care; to direct curricula to the human development of the child and of adults, and not to diseases; to give importance to the period of life between conception and the third year; to develop in health workers an attitude of respect for adult's practical knowledge and common sense.
