It is presented an epistemological option for ethnography from an hermeneutic perspective. The analysis is funded in three dimensions: research recognized as contextual, the production of knowledge and the possibility to generalize it, and finally the practical uses of it. In regard with these three dimensions, validity and criteria for research quality are analyzed , identifying scope and limitations. Finally, the possibility to use outcomes for policies and programs is discussed from a conception of legitimacy.
