PEDRAZA AVELLA, Aura Cecilia  e  RIBERO MEDINA, Rocío. El trabajo infantil y juvenil en Colombia y algunas de sus consecuencias claves. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2006, vol.4, n.1, pp.177-216. ISSN 1692-715X.

This paper researches on the effects of child labor on schooling and health of children in Colombia. By using the data of the Living Standards Measurement Survey of 2003, we conclude that joining the labor force at the early ages of 12 -17 negatively affects school attendance and over-age and it deteriorates children perception of their own health status. For minors younger than eleven, the relationship between child labor and schooling was not so significant, probably because of the relatively lower number of children on this condition and because of the rather large primary schooling coverage in the country. The fact that health status was not affected either for this 3 age group maybe due to the fact that their activities are lighter and that consequences of child labor on health are not immediately perceived. The econometric exercises contained in this paper predict that those programs and policies oriented towards increasing school coverage and quality, and to increase school attendance, mainly at the secondary levels, will be great tools to help eradicate child labor in Colombia.
