Abstract
ALVARADO SALGADO, Sara Victoria and CARRENO BUSTAMANTE, María Teresa. Citizen education: A strategy for the construction of justice. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2007, vol.5, n.1, pp.35-56. ISSN 1692-715X.
This paper refers to the relation between citizenship and justice in Colombia, starting from a consideration of the historical development of citizenship, during which individual, social and political rights have been recognized. At the present time, it becomes necessary also to recognize cultural rights. If citizenship implies the recognition of rights and duties, justice is required to implement them. It is argued that citizen education and the active exercise of citizenship are privileged strategies to realize social justice. It is also recognized that for the State to guarantee justice it is necessary to acknowledge citizens' rights and duties, with criteria of social fairness that make possible the improvement of conditions and quality of life, with opportunities for adequate distribution of goods. This paper centers on the recognition of citizenship from the perspective of rights, and argues that it can be achieved only through a form of education that relates it to justice, itself also seen from the perspective of rights.
