AGUADO QUINTERO, Luis Fernando et al. Determinants for the use of health services in the Colombian Pacific Coast. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2007, vol.5, n.1, pp.233-281. ISSN 1692-715X.
This paper analyzes individual and contextual determinants that influence the use of health services by mothers before, during and after child bearing in the Colombian Pacific Coast. We constructed statistical indicators and estimated binary regression models based on micro-data from the National Survey on Demography and Health 2005, and the Special Register of Health Organizations of the Colombian Heath and Social Protection Ministry. The calculated indicators and the estimated models show that the variables that most influence the mothers' use of qualified pre-natal attention, insititutional child bearing (natal attention) and post-natal attention are, according to their importance: inscription in a social security program, birth order of children, level of education, and the mother´s place of residence. This paper also shows the profound territorial inequity evident in the Colombian Pacific Coast, when its situation is compared to the national average in provision and access to basic social services.
