GUEVARA, Hilda Mabel. Student identities, knowledge and culture. Perceptions of male and female university students in Cuyo, Argentina. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2009, vol.7, n.1, pp.209-234. ISSN 1692-715X.
This article aims at recovering the meanings of the academic experience from a personal and subjective dimension: the identity personified in the voices and in the autobiographical statements of a group of male and female university students. It also aims at reflecting the most outstanding perceptions about the relations that these young men and women can keep with their knowledge, in a cultural context with multiple transformations. It is orientated to emphasize the findings produced in the framework of a doctoral thesis directed by Prof. Violeta Guyot from UNSL,Argentina1, and of a postdoctoral study developed under the coordination of Doctor Pilar Lacasa, from UAH, Spain2. It deals with the in-depth analysis of 20 statements made by first-year students from two Argentinian universities: UNSJ and UNSL. This article also deals with the primary data corresponding to male and female youths with ages between 17 and 31 years. The initial population consisted of 556 young men and women (320 from UNSJ and 236 from UNSL), from whom 428 surveys were validated; a strategy that allows me to describe them in terms of ciphers. The resulting testimonies were analyzed by means of Nudist and N.VIVO version 2.0; computer resources that facilitated the construction of analysis categories for the search of the meanings assigned by the own students themselves. This product recovers a particular time and a singular sequence of events, facts and experiences in which the students perceive themselves as actors or main characters.
