GUERRA LAGE, María Cecilia. Networks and imaginary global cities. The stencil in Buenos Aires, Argentina (2000-2007). Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2009, vol.7, n.1, pp.355-374. ISSN 1692-715X.
The present paper examines the phenomenon about the proliferation of street stencils as one of the cultural aspects of the overall process of economic globalization, while internet access is crucial in the mode of production and circulation of these images. Through the Web, groups producing stencils form a horizontal cross-border communication network that interconnects various peripheral and central cities. Through this network, the stencil groups swap templates, largely linked to a counter-hegemonic discourse and local claims that quickly become global. This enables the integration and global presence of actors and social discourses that were considered silenced by the dominance of the media and by the formal political scheme.
