MENKES, Dominique. Otaku youth culture: expression of postmodernism. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2012, vol.10, n.1, pp.51-62. ISSN 1692-715X.

If we want to analyze contemporary Japanese culture, we cannot ignore otaku culture. Even more, which constitutes essentially our age, is manifested particularly clearly in this youth culture in perpetual growth in Japan since the 1980S'. This phenomenon represents today a colossal market that extends rapidly to the rest of the world. This work begins by exposing the magnitude of the phenomenon at a commercial level. Then we explain that what constitutes in essence the so-called post-modern structures of society is clearly observed in this culture. Finally, we explain the social factors underlying the Japanese otakism.

Keywords : culture; youth; otaku; post-modernity; Japan.
