Abstract

JURADO, Claudia  and  TOBASURA, Isaías. The youth dilemma in rural territories of the coffee growing region, Colombia: ¿the country side area or the city?. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2012, vol.10, n.1, pp.63-77. ISSN 1692-715X.

In this paper we present some preliminary results of the study still in process "Alternative experiences of political action with participation of young people". The study seeks to understand the way in which demographic, migratory and productive transitions contribute in the construction of young identities and their life projects in rural environments of the Colombian Coffee Growing Region, and to identify young people's motivations, their identity problems, their expectancies and some of the reasons for leaving the rural areas. Our findings suggest that, even though rural environments tends to be highly valued as a desirable life spaces, familiar and labor expectancies and the identity of young people seems to be built on the imagery of the city.

Keywords : rural youth; country migration; cultural identity; social environment.
