Abstract

MARIA DOS SANTOS, Rubenize; NASCIMENTO, Maria Aparecida  and  DE ARAUJO MENEZES, Jaileila. The meaning of public school for poor children from Recife. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2012, vol.10, n.1, pp.289-300. ISSN 1692-715X.

This article reflects on the meaning of school for poor children in the context of public education in northeastern Brazil. The literature on youth commonly reports a tense relationship between the young and the school. From within a qualitative perspective, we observed a high school classroom and invited students to produce narratives about an actual school, as real as possible. The analysis unfolds in five areas: organization and discipline, infrastructure, quality of education and professionalism of teachers, social interactions, and school and life project. Despite the difficulties experienced by young people, they find the educational process important for the realization of their life projects and value the school by its sociability experience.

Keywords : young poor; public school; life projects.
