Abstract
FERNANDEZ, Aleida and VASCO, Eloísa. Dynamics of Recognition in the narratives of Youth with Disabilities. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2012, vol.10, n.1, pp.467-479. ISSN 1692-715X.
This article is derived from a research project that adopted a moral perspective in the consideration of disability, based specifically on the Ethics of Recognition proposed by Axel Honneth. The dynamics of social recognition, exclusion and humiliation, as well as the struggle to gain recognition, are described and analyzed from the point of view of a group of 25 young men and women who suffered some kind of disability and who registered for admission to the National University of Colombia. These young men and women participated in group conversations, and six of them were privately interviewed and invited to share their experience. They emerge as persons who exhibit positive self-esteem, who perceive their right to be legally recognized in terms of equity and who expect recognition as members of society.
Keywords : human rights; disability; ethics of recognition; social disdain; dynamics and struggles for recognition; vindication of rights.
