Abstract
URIBE, J. Isaac; AMADOR, Genoveva; ZACARIAS, Ximena and VILLARREAL, Leticia. Perceptions of condom use and sexuality among young people. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2012, vol.10, n.1, pp.481-494. ISSN 1692-715X.
The objective of our study was to determine the relation between the perceptions of condom use and risky sexual activity among young university students. The participants were 273 undergraduate men and women with ages ranging between 19 to 25 years. A Likert-type scale with 31 items was applied, with four dimensions that measure the negative perception of condom use, knowledge of safe sex behavior and mistaken beliefs about sexually transmitted infections and condom use. Significant differences between men and women regarding negative perceptions of condom use are shown; positive correlations were obtained in the use of condoms during the first sexual relation and its later use. The results are discussed from socio-cultural and gender perspectives.
Keywords : condom use; sexuality; young people.
