Abstract

GARCIA-VILLANUEVA, Jorge; DE LA ROSA-ACOSTA, Adara  and  CASTILLO-VALDES, Jessica S.. Violence: analysis of its conceptualization in young high school students. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2012, vol.10, n.1, pp.495-512. ISSN 1692-715X.

The objective of this research project was to describe the semantic elements of the meaning of secondary school violence for a sample of secondary school students. Through analysis of natural semantic networks the concepts mostly associated with violence were: physical abuse, beatings, aggression, mistreatment and abuse, with stronger semantic weight for women. Defining variables were grouped in eight categories of analysis: type of abuse, symptoms, social influences, coercion and descriptive, qualifying and symbolic attributes. Of these the most significant for women were those related to social influence and emotional attributes. For men the defining variables as triggers of violent behaviour were more commonly associated with external factors, and for women those related to vulnerability and perceived weakness when confronted with physical violence.

Keywords : youth,; violence; semantic memory; gender differences.
