Abstract

JARAMILLO, Jorge Mario; PEREZ, Laura  and  GONZALEZ, Karen Alexandra. Mother´s socialization goals: relation with age, education level and area of residence. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2013, vol.11, n.2, pp.719-739. ISSN 1692-715X.

Abstract (analytical): In this article we analyze how the house area (urban /rural), the educational level and the age of the mothers relate with their socialization goals. By means of an individual structured interview, we ask 163 mothers from the city of Bogotá and several municipalities of the rural Cundiboyacenseregion to make an estimate of the value attributed to different goals in the socialization their children's whose ages ranged between 3 and 4 and a half years. This way, we sought to identify the priority values that guide the mothers in the educational practices with their children. The results suggest that the mothers from urban areas, who are younger and have a higher educational leveltend to give greater value to socialization goals related with promoting independence, whereas the mothers who are older and have lower educational levels value more the socialization goals related with interdependence. Questions are posed about how the expansion of market economy and the development of new communication technologies could be contributing to changes in the values that inspire maternal educational practices.

Keywords : Socialization; independence; interdependence; early childhood.
