Abstract

RENGIFO-MILLAN, Maritza. Globalization of the Knowledge Society and University Transformation. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2015, vol.13, n.2, pp.809-822. ISSN 1692-715X.  https://doi.org/10.11600/1692715x.13218060415.

The world is currently undergoing a series of changes resulting from globalization and advancement of the knowledge society. As the main reference point for the production of knowledge, higher education has played a leading role in this process by bringing about significant transformations at university level. This article examines the characteristics, main strategic axes, and outcomes of these transformations. The methodological approach of the study is based on the description and analysis of research studies conducted from 1997 to 2013 that compare industrialized countries with Latin American countries. The study concludes that the main differences between these two types of societies are that in Latin America there is reduced funding for higher education, limited access for youth to universities, lack of innovation and internationalization of university curricula and research outcomes and the negligible culture of quality in Latin America.
