This article presents the results of a study into the main factors associated with female students dropping out of secondary education in Hermosillo Sonora, Mexico. Through the life stories of young women that have dropped out and interviews with actors from the school community and parents of students, the author undertakes a joint analysis that reveals the experiences in dropping out of school that these young women share. The study highlights that young women generally drop out of their studies due to a combination of factors related to their social, youth and gender conditions. The results show the different situations of vulnerability that they are exposed to as a result of dropping out, which represent shifts in their lives that are at the same time points of no return in terms of their educational trajectory.
