Abstract

ROJAS-MATURANA, Marcela  and  PENA-CORTES, Fernando. Lafkenche environmental knowledge in schools along the coast of Araucanía (Chile). Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2015, vol.13, n.2, pp.1207-1220. ISSN 1692-715X.  https://doi.org/10.11600/1692715x.13245171214.

This study is an approach to the reality of the oral transmission of knowledge and practices in the lafkenche territory by families that live in the wetlands areas along the coastal rim of La Araucanía (Chile). Surveys were applied children, parents, teachers and cultural advisors in five schools for the data collection process. The study identifies the existence of territorial knowledge among this population, however this is only expressed and transmitted within the home. The authors conclude that a systematic approach to engaging students with their original culture, the permanence of cultural advisors in the context of the school, a real commitment by non-indigenous teachers and their knowledge and respect of the local indigenous culture can eventually achieve satisfactory results in the preservation of the lafkenche language and cultural practices.

Keywords : bilingual education; wetlands; traditional knowledge; Chile; lafkenche.
