Abstract

PABON-CHAVES, Ana Sofía  and  HURTADO-HERRERA, Deibar René. "My skin is a canvas". Meanings of the body modification of young people of Cali. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2016, vol.14, n.1, pp.477-491. ISSN 1692-715X.  https://doi.org/10.11600/1692715x.14132150415.

This article reports on a study that had the objective of understanding the meanings of body modification, as practiced by young people from Cali. The methodology used was grounded theory. The study identified the young people as active subjects that appropriate their bodies in order to transform them and to affirm their differences and singularity within a context of homogenization. The authors conclude that as part of body modification practices, other corporalities are configured and are materialized in young people’ s life worlds. Such corporalities are in accordance with subjectivities directed by others that are permanently exhibited to others.

Keywords : Young people; body; body modification; body aesthetics; subjectivity.
