AMORIM DA SILVA, Roseane e DE ARAUJO MENEZES, Jaileila. The meanings of alcohol use among young people from the Quilombola indigenous community. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2016, vol.14, n.1, pp.493-504. ISSN 1692-715X. https://doi.org/10.11600/1692715x.14133120515.
This study aimed to investigate the meanings of alcohol use among young people two Quilombola communities, Castainho and Estivas, located in Garanhuns in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. The research is qualitative and was developed over two stages. In the first stage the researchers conducted participant observation in communities, followed by semi-structured interviews with young men and women from the Quilombola community. Data was analyzed based on the theoretical concept of the intersectionality of social markers such as gender, race/ethnicity and social class. Young people consume alcohol at different times and for different reasons: to have fun, socialize with friends, confront difficult situations and/or deal with unpleasant emotional states, have fun, socialize with friends and others. The authors emphasize the effects that these social markers have on the lives of young people, which in turn affects their consumption of alcohol and the need to consider these factors in health prevention and promotion in order to contribute to quality of life of youth.
