DIAZ-BORQUEZ, Daniela; CONTRERAS-SHATS, Nicolás e BOZO-CARRILLO, Natalia. Child participation as an approximation to democracy: Challenges from the Chilean experience. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2018, vol.16, n.1, pp.101-113. ISSN 1692-715X. https://doi.org/10.11600/1692715x.16105.
In recent years, Chile has encouraged child participation through participatory processes that have been used to contribute to the design of the National Children’s Policy. Based on Save the Children standards, this study analyzes the quality of child participation by exploring the perceptions of 299 professionals linked to the world of children throughout Chile. The article also reflects on the scope and limitations of child participation as an expression of democracy in a country that has taken 26 years to adapt its legislation and the work of its to the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The results highlight the voluntary, respectful, pertinent and inclusive character of children’s participation, in which the challenge is to develop more responsible, transparent and informed participatory processes to achieve democracy and progressive autonomy.
