Abstract

VALDES-HENAO, Carolina. University dropouts: between institutional detachment and a search for meaning in life. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2018, vol.16, n.1, pp.331-344. ISSN 1692-715X.  https://doi.org/10.11600/1692715x.16120.

This paper presents the results of a study that has the purpose of understanding the links between primary/secondary education and higher education, specifically dropping out or remaining in university education in Manizales, Colombia. Methodology: The study used a qualitative approach to collect data through discussion groups and interviews with teachers and students from primary, secondary and higher education institutions. Results and conclusions: The results show how life plans overlap with the meaning of life and homogenization overlaps with diversity. This constitutes not just an institutional disengagement but continuous psychological disengagement of students in school and university life. Finally, the study acknowledges the importance of considering education not as a mechanism of control but as a link that leads to students continuing with their education.
