This article presents the results obtained from the study “Representations of ‘the political’ among secondary students and teachers of secondary schools in the metropolitan region: Guidelines for a new proposal for citizenship education”, undertaken in the city of Santiago, Chile. This study began with an initial quantitative exploratory phase to collect students’ and teachers’ perceptions about politics and associated concepts -democracy, power, participation. As a second step, this study employed qualitative methodology to investigate the meanings attached by participants to the value and significance of politics and democracy at social and school levels. The results of the study show a withdrawal of young boys and girls from institutional politics, a high valuation of the participation of members of society in national politics and the need to strengthen democracy at schools.
