Abstract
RIBEIRO-VELAZQUEZ, Silvanne and CORONA-SANCHEZ, Edith Sebastiana. Babies read the world: reading mediation in a public library. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2025, vol.23, n.2, pp.23-45. Epub July 24, 2025. ISSN 1692-715X. https://doi.org/10.11600/rlcsnj.23.2.6477.
Babies explore the world from birth, expanding their experiences through language. However, in Latin America, investment in reading for this stage of the life cycle is limited. This study analyzes reading mediation activities in a library specifically designed for babies located in a public university, highlighting the role of reading mediators in the early formation of readers and the impact of these spaces. Through a case study that contains observations and interviews, the authors identified three areas of analysis: the training and performance of reading mediators; spaces and environments that promote reading mediation; and the collection of books available to be read with babies. The study identified that interactions in these contexts foster the development of autonomous readers and strengthen the community. The democratic role of the public university is highlighted through its provision of spaces that promote both reading and reading mediation.
