Abstract

FERNANDEZ-PONCELA, Ana María. Conflicting views: beliefs, emotions and opinions regarding youth political participation. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2025, vol.23, n.2, pp.161-185.  Epub July 31, 2025. ISSN 1692-715X.  https://doi.org/10.11600/rlcsnj.23.2.6742.

There is a reduced presence of young people in political positions and a high level of voter abstention among young people. Two questions emerge from this situation: do young people feel taken into account in politics?; and, does society trust young people to engage in politics? This article un-dertakes an expansive and indepth examination of this issue, highlighting the distrust shown by adult citizens towards young people involved in politics, as well as the skepticism evidenced among young people in relation to the political sphere. The author draws on surveys and interviews in Mexico City that illustrate these beliefs and emotions. The analysis of results show that there is significantly more trust of adults as candidates for office and they are considered to be more capable in terms of governance. The studies show that for young people, politics doesn’t interest them, they do not feel taken into account and sometimes the interest is reduced to just voting.
