Abstract
CASTELLAR-LEONES, Sandra Milena et al. Position paper. Recommendations for Prescribing Technical Aids in the Rehabilitation of Patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Rev. Cienc. Salud [online]. 2025, vol.23, n.spe, e23e7. Epub Apr 22, 2025. ISSN 1692-7273. https://doi.org/10.12804/revistas.urosario.edu.co/revsalud/a.13741.
In patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the ability to walk gradually decreases until the loss of walking, around the age of 9. Although disease progression is inevitable, comprehensive rehabilitation aims to prolong gross and manual motor function, minimize contractures, promote bone health, protect proper spinal alignment, and prolong walking. This is expected to improve quality of life and transition to adolescence and adulthood. Among the rehabilitation interventions for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the use of orthoses and wheelchairs is considered.
Materials and methods:
An expert panel with knowledge and experience in managing patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy was formed. Recommendations were made based on available evidence reviewed by experts, their knowledge, clinical experience, and characteristics of the Colombian health system. Recommendations were subjected to voting (over 85 % favorability in two voting cycles). In case of a lower agreement percentage, the recommendation was discussed again, and a second voting cycle was conducted.
Results and discussion:
A series of recommendations on the prescription of assistive devices in rehabilitation (orthoses and wheelchairs) for patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy are issued. Additional studies are needed to address unanswered questions regarding the prescription of assistive devices in patients with this disease.
