Resumen

GENEZ, Kevin; POSADA, Viviana; FERNANDEZ-MORALES, Patricia  y  RAMIREZ, Juan. Cytotoxic evaluation and biocompatibility of AZ31B alloy for applications in bone tissue engineering. Prospect. [online]. 2016, vol.14, n.2, pp.7-12. ISSN 1692-8261.  https://doi.org/10.15665/rp.v14i2.691.

The development of innovative materials for the manufacture of biodegradable bone implants is one of the most important research topics in the area of biomaterials. The materials, from which these implants are made, can be gradually dissolved, absorbed, consumed or excreted by the human body, eliminating the need for secondary surgical procedures for removal of the implant. Magnesium alloys appear as promissory materials to be used in orthopedic applications, considering its biocompatible potential. Nonetheless, due to its chemical properties, this material rapidly corrodes producing subcutaneous gas bubbles resulting in a variety of toxics corrosion products. In that sense the use of Mg and its alloys as biodegradable material in orthopedic applications is not completely establish. For this reason the purpose of this work is to determine the cytotoxic effects of the AZ31B alloy corrosion products using metal foam configuration made from such material and the evaluation of cell viability using MTT reduction salts method. The results show a signifi cant cytotoxic effect of the biocorrosion products on CHO-K1 cells, which is directly related to the release of ions and consequent increase in pH in the culture medium.
