Abstract

The main objective of the research was to design, construct and instrument a pavement equipment who determines the permanent deformations in flexible pavements with a pneumatic system that transfers loads to the samples. The development of equipment started with an automation process consisting of a user-machine interface in which variables such as pressure, humidity, temperature and number of cycles per minute are defined, for later perform a real-time data acquisition using a 18F4550 microcontroller with USB transmission. Test duration is approximately 2 hours, during which temperature control is performed by means of four J type thermocouples that are distributed in the chamber of the machine. In addition, the pressure of the pneumatic actuators and the speed of the test are controlled with a variable speed drive. These types of controllers are discrete PID implemented in the microcontroller and the speed drive.

As a result of the research, a machine was designed, constructed and implemented with the capacity to evaluate the behavior of the pavement permanent deformations under controlled conditions of temperature and admissible loads, the first using resistors and thermocouples, the other by means of pneumatic actuators. The system was developed in such a way that the final user will indicate only the initial conditions and the test will be developed autonomously. Finally, a versatile equipment was built for the execution of tests on pavements that represents the deformation under the real conditions of load, temperature, UV radiation and humidity, variables to which a pavement structure is subjected
